Why get an assessment by a Speech Pathologist and Psychologist?
An autism assessment involving both a Psychologist and a Speech Pathologist offers a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual's strengths and challenges. Psychologists examine cognitive, emotional, and social aspects, while speech pathologists focus on communication and language skills. Even if your child does not have a speech delay, a review by a Speech Pathologist provides rich information on the child's differences in social communication skills. Collaboration between two professionals ensures a holistic approach to diagnosis and helps tease out an differential diagnosis, benefiting the individual and their family.
Furthermore, a formal diagnosis in WA requires three professionals to complete the assessment (a paediatrician, a speech pathologist, and a psychologist) as currently required by Department of Education and NDIS.
The assessment costs $1250 for the psychologist and $1250 for the speech pathologist. There is currently a 6 month wait. * * Please note that to access Medicare rebates for an autism assessments you will need a referral from a paediatrician. Annika Ballantyne and Michelle Rhyder have been collaborating on what is known as "Mandurah Autism Assessments" since 2021. Together we provide a comprehensive assessment service that aims to minimise stress on the child and family. All assessments are completed in the office on one half day and input from parents and teachers is a key part of the assessment, with pre-assessment paperwork required.
We work from a neurodiverse affirming perspective, such as tailoring assessment tools to each person's unique strengths, accommodating their communication and sensory needs, and respecting their autonomy and lived experiences.
