Neurodiversity - What is it all about?

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is a term used to describe the range of differences in brain functioning and behaviour that are considered to be normal. It encompasses a wide range of neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other related conditions.

Neurodiversity is about understanding that everyone’s brain works differently and recognizing the unique strengths and potentials of each individual. By valuing neurodiversity, we can create an environment where everyone can thrive regardless of their neurological makeup.

What is neurodiversity affirming practice?

Neurodivergent people have faced discrimination in the environment for far too long. This discrimination is rooted in ableism and neurotypical bias that has been perpetuated by society for generations. Many parts of society that impacts our daily lives are inadvertently disadvantaging neurodiverse people.

Neurodiversity affirming practice is an approach to understanding and supporting neurodiverse individuals. This approach seeks to respect and celebrate differences in cognition, behaviour, learning styles, and communication styles. It also seeks to create an environment where individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders can feel safe and supported. Neurodiversity affirming practice emphasizes the importance of understanding individual needs, providing appropriate accommodations in educational settings, and creating inclusive communities that celebrate diversity.

Why is diagnosis important?

As noted above, society has created barriers and disadvantages for neurodiverse people, which can have a significant impact on an individual's ability to function in everyday life. A proper diagnosis is essential for understanding the individual's needs and accessing the appropriate support services. With a neurodevelopmental diagnosis, individuals can gain access to affirming therapies and other resources that can help them modify their environment to support their needs. Furthermore, a diagnosis can also provide insight into how the brain works and how to best meet an individual’s unique needs. Ultimately, a neurodevelopmental diagnosis is important for providing individuals with the support they need to thrive.
